Where coats and jackets wear first

Wool shows shine or pilling at the elbows; linings give way first at the armholes and pocket bags. On Gore-Tex shells, the seam tape inside should lie flat, with no bubbling. Leather should stay supple, without cracks at the elbow creases, and fur or shearling trim should be dense, not shedding. In-house, our team inspects every piece before listing: labels, stitching, zips, snaps and fabric content.

Water-repellent or waterproof: which keeps rain out?

A water-repellent finish, as on the Loro Piana over-trench, makes rain bead and run off but gives way in a long downpour. A waterproof membrane, such as the Gore-Tex in the Prada Trench Donna, keeps it out while the seams stay taped and the membrane intact.

Which pieces were made in England or Italy?

The Burberrys trench and rain coats and a Burberry London quilted jacket were made in England. Italy covers most of the rest with a stated origin, including Loro Piana, Boglioli, Brioni and the 1980s Moncler, while the Linea Rossa coat and work jacket came from Romania.

How should a down coat be stored over summer?

Clean, dry and loosely hung in a breathable cover, somewhere cool. Months in a vacuum bag flatten the down clusters.
