Decade by decade

• 1980s: Christian Dior ski goggles that come with three interchangeable crocodile-embossed frames, and a long quilted Moncler down jacket for women.
• 1990s: red suede high-waist Gucci trousers, black Levi's leather trousers, Burberrys check shirts, Polo Ralph Lauren utility cargos, Oakley Sub Zero and M Frame sport shades, a Valentino 3328 and a Gianni Versace MOD X36 dated 1996.
• 2000s: a Stone Island turtleneck from 2001, Prada Milano and Prada Sport pieces from AW06, Dolce & Gabbana FW05 Poem jeans and an AW09 Scarface hoodie, a 2006 Dior Homme blazer and Prada Linea Rossa knits from 2008. In eyewear this is the Y2K decade: rimless and shield sunglasses from Chanel, Prada, Dior and Gucci.

Names that date a piece

Some titles name the designer in charge, which narrows a piece to a span of years: Gucci by Tom Ford (1994–2004), Dior under John Galliano (1996–2011), Dior Homme under Hedi Slimane (2000–2007) and Jil Sander under Raf Simons (2005–2012). Spelling helps too: Burberry labels read Burberrys until the late 1990s, and several coats and shirts here still carry that name. Pieces made in earlier decades rather than current seasons, mostly between the 1980s and the late 2000s. Many titles carry the date itself: a decade (90's), a year (2001) or a season (FW05).

Is vintage in worse condition than recent stock?

Not as a rule. Condition is graded piece by piece, not by age: most vintage items here carry Pre-owned Excellent, others Good or, rarely, Fair.

Vintage or archive: how do the terms differ?

Vintage is about age, archive about a named past collection of a house, such as the FW05 Dolce & Gabbana Poem jeans or Prada’s AW2010 nylon blazer. That is why a few early-2010s pieces are included.
