Formal shoes are structured lace-ups made to wear with tailoring, and every pair in this section was made in Italy. Santoni, Louis Vuitton, Prada and Tom Ford-era Gucci supply the pre-owned and vintage derbies, oxfords and brogues, with dressier loafers listed alongside.

More about Formal Shoes

Oxford, derby, brogue: the lacing decides

The eyelets tell them apart. On an oxford the facings are stitched under the vamp, so the lacing closes flat: the black Tom Ford-era Gucci oxford, trimmed with metal at the sides, is built this way, as is a women’s Prada brogue with rubberized studs. On a derby they sit on top of the vamp and open wider over a high instep, as on the Santoni cap-toe, the Louis Vuitton Baikal, the dark brown Gucci apron-toe, a plain black vintage Prada pair and a Prada Milano derby on a platform. Brogue names the punched perforations, not the lacing, so the Santoni and the Baikal are brogue derbies, the Baikal with a wingtip toe.

Soles and heels

Most of the lace-ups sit on rubber, which grips better than leather in the wet. The Santoni and the Baikal add stacked heels. Leather soles appear on the women’s Prada brogue and on the Maison Margiela Tabi, a split-toe derby in clear PVC. Softer takes: the Common Projects Cadet in tan suede with a crepe sole, a taupe Belstaff derby with a stitched welt and Loro Piana Urban Walk desert boots. Loafers are gathered under Casual Leather Shoes; taller pairs are in Boots.

FAQ

Is a derby less formal than an oxford?

By tradition, yes. Closed lacing looks cleaner, so a black oxford suits the strictest dress codes, while a derby moves easily from a suit to jeans.

What does a stitched welt add?

A welt is a leather strip stitched between upper and sole. Because the sole is sewn on rather than only glued, a cobbler can usually replace it once worn.

What does vero cuoio mean?

Italian for “genuine leather”, often stamped under Italian-made shoes, as in the Belstaff pair’s name. It describes the material, not the maker.

Which signs of wear matter on a dress shoe?

Creasing across the vamp is normal; cracks along it, a heel worn down on one side or a scuffed toe cap say more. Authenticity is verified in-house before listing, from markings and stitching to the leather.
