What the label tells you

The label is a quick guide to age and line:

• Burberrys is the spelling on older labels, before the late-1990s change to Burberry. Here it is on England-made coats, a 1990s check button-down, a check-and-belt print shirt and a white polo in Burberrys logo jacquard.
• Prorsum is the word on the Equestrian Knight emblem, later the name of the runway line. In titles it marks long rain coats and trenches, a charcoal double-breasted blazer in virgin wool and raw denim jeans.
• Burberry London appears on many shirts and polos, a black Harrington jacket, check trousers and caps.
• Burberry Brit, the casual line: a goose-down puffer, quilted jackets with corduroy or velvet collars and a blue tartan poplin shirt.

The lines were merged into one Burberry label in the mid-2010s, so Prorsum and Brit labels point to earlier pieces.

Coats, shirts and the house check

The coats are beige macs and trenches in cotton blends, lined in Nova Check. Among the shirts are beige check button-downs, blue tartans, a white logo-grid print, a cream floral and plain cotton with an embroidered knight. Does the Burberrys spelling date a piece?

It dates the label but proves nothing on its own: Burberrys points to the years before the renaming, and the rest of the piece has to match that era.

Why do some Burberry labels say Made in Turkey or Portugal?

A country other than England is no warning sign in itself. The coats here were made in England, as were several shirts and polos; other shirts, polos, hoodies and trousers come from Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Romania or Italy.
